The site

The plot lies on a gentle slope down to Lake Mälaren, with old fields on one side and a stand of oaks on the other. In winter the lake freezes and the light turns blue for hours. The clients are moving from the city and want one house for the rest of their lives, with room for grandchildren and a ground floor that will still work when the stairs feel steep.

The idea

The design places all daily rooms on the ground floor, in one long band facing the lake. Above them, under a zinc roof, sit the rooms for guests. A base of hand-moulded brick lifts the house slightly above the meadow, and walls of lime render take the colour of the sky. Between house and oaks we have drawn a timber loggia where the family can sit outside from early spring to late autumn.

Materials

Lime render material sample

Lime render

Walls at Djurgården, Fårö and Sigtuna. Lime lets masonry breathe, softens light across a wall and can be repaired patch by patch.

Pre-weathered zinc material sample

Pre-weathered zinc

Roofs and edges at Möja, Sandhamn and Sigtuna. Pre-weathering gives the zinc its matt grey from day one, close to winter sky.

Oiled oak material sample

Oiled oak

Windows, floors, handrails and tables in most of our houses. Oil lets the grain breathe, and worn spots can be refreshed by hand.

Hand-moulded brick material sample

Hand-moulded brick

The base and chimney of the Sigtuna Lake House. Each brick is slightly irregular, so a plain wall catches low light in small shadows.

“Elin asked us how we wanted to live in twenty years, not only next summer. It was the first time anyone had planned a house around that question.”
