The site

The plot is narrow and deep, wedged between older houses and a row of tall trees. A family of five wanted to live in the city without giving up a garden, and they wanted rooms that would still work when the children had left. The neighbours were close on both sides, and the planning rules asked for a facade that would sit calmly in a street of historic buildings and their gardens.

The idea

We placed the house at the front of the plot and gave the back to a garden court with a single birch. Inside, a limestone stair rises through all four floors beside a tall slot of daylight, so even the middle of the house is never dark. Oiled oak windows are set deep in the stone, which shields the rooms from the street without closing them off. Lime render on the courtyard side keeps the garden soft and bright.

Materials

Gotland limestone material sample

Gotland limestone

Floors, stairs and walls at Djurgården and Fårö. A pale, fossil-flecked stone that stays cool in summer and takes on a gentle sheen.

Oiled oak material sample

Oiled oak

Windows, floors, handrails and tables in most of our houses. Oil lets the grain breathe, and worn spots can be refreshed by hand.

Lime render material sample

Lime render

Walls at Djurgården, Fårö and Sigtuna. Lime lets masonry breathe, softens light across a wall and can be repaired patch by patch.

“We expected a city house to feel enclosed. Instead the stair brings daylight down to the kitchen, and in autumn we cook looking straight into the trees.”
