Ground floor plan
The site
The land on Fårö is open and flat, a field of limestone, juniper and old dry stone walls running towards the sea. There is little shelter and a great deal of sky. The clients wanted a summer house for long stays with friends, and they wanted it to belong to the island rather than to a catalogue. Their fear was a house that would look like it had been dropped from somewhere else.
The idea
We split the house into two low buildings and set them along an existing dry stone wall, so the wall becomes part of the plan. Between them lies a terrace that opens to the sea and is sheltered from the wind on both sides. The walls are local limestone under lime render, the beams and doors are larch. Inside, the floors are limestone too, so the rooms stay cool on hot afternoons and the light falls softly across the walls.

Section AA
Materials

Gotland limestone
Floors, stairs and walls at Djurgården and Fårö. A pale, fossil-flecked stone that stays cool in summer and takes on a gentle sheen.

Lime render
Walls at Djurgården, Fårö and Sigtuna. Lime lets masonry breathe, softens light across a wall and can be repaired patch by patch.

Stained larch
Beams and cladding at Fårö and Värmdö. A dense, resinous timber, stained lightly so it greys evenly instead of in patches.
“Our neighbour says the house looks as if it has always been there. We spend most evenings on the terrace between the two buildings, out of the wind.”
