The site

The boathouse had stood at the water’s edge for generations and had been in the family just as long. The roof leaked, the floor was soft in places and the building was used for little more than storing oars. The owners did not want a new house. They wanted to keep the boathouse they remembered from childhood and make it a place to sleep, read and watch the water from close up.

The idea

We repaired before we added. The old trusses and most of the boards stayed, cleaned and strengthened where needed, and the building kept its red-brown colour. A new zinc roof keeps the weather out. On the water side we cut one large opening at the height of the sea, so from the bed you see the water and the boats. Inside, heat-treated pine and oiled oak sit beside the old timber without hiding it.

Materials

Heat-treated pine material sample

Heat-treated pine

Cladding at Möja and Sandhamn. Heat treatment keeps Swedish pine stable in salt air, and it weathers to a soft silver grey.

Pre-weathered zinc material sample

Pre-weathered zinc

Roofs and edges at Möja, Sandhamn and Sigtuna. Pre-weathering gives the zinc its matt grey from day one, close to winter sky.

Oiled oak material sample

Oiled oak

Windows, floors, handrails and tables in most of our houses. Oil lets the grain breathe, and worn spots can be refreshed by hand.

“Nothing about the boathouse feels new from the outside. Inside, we wake up at eye level with the water and watch the first boats go out.”
