The site

The plot is a slope of old pine forest with granite breaking through the moss. The clients love the trees and did not want to lose more of them than absolutely necessary. They also wanted a house that would be warm and simple to run through long winters, and they asked for a building that would look better in thirty years than on the day it is finished, and still feel at home among the trees.

The idea

The house stands on a few concrete footings, so the forest floor and the roots between them are left alone. A frame of glued laminated timber was raised in a few weeks and carries the whole house. Stained larch boards close the walls and will grey evenly in the shade of the pines. Inside, the rooms follow the slope in a long line, and every window frames a different group of trunks.

Materials

Stained larch material sample

Stained larch

Beams and cladding at Fårö and Värmdö. A dense, resinous timber, stained lightly so it greys evenly instead of in patches.

Flamed granite material sample

Flamed granite

Terraces, steps and hearths at Möja and Värmdö. Flaming roughens the surface, so the local stone stays safe underfoot in rain and frost.

Oiled oak material sample

Oiled oak

Windows, floors, handrails and tables in most of our houses. Oil lets the grain breathe, and worn spots can be refreshed by hand.

“We counted the trees before the work began, and almost all of them are still standing. Watching the frame rise between them was the best part of the year.”
